Gary Abrahams directs acclaimed US playwright Jonathan Tolins’ off-Broadway hit stage play about the man who finds himself in Barbra Streisand’s cellar-turned shopping mall, for the Melbourne Theatre Company.
Sisters Grimms’ Ash Flanders stars as Alex Moore, an out of work actor who takes a job working in Streisand’s cellar, where her clothing has been arranged as in a shopping mall. This was something Streisand revealed in her book My Passion for Design.
Otherwise the play is pure fiction. Alex dreams of serving the mall’s customer, and ends up falling for the celebrated performer. Tolins wrote the comic homage to Streisand after reading her book, and director Abrahams will bring new life to the razor-sharp script, tailored for Flanders’ comic stylings.
