Butlin’s ‘warns staff 1,000 jobs at risk when furlough ends next month’

A sixth of Butlin's 6,000 staff are said to be at risk of losing their jobs when the Government's furlough scheme comes to an end in October, it has been reported.

The BBC claim to have seen documentation sent to employees - and the holiday camp operator has hit out at the decision to make public the findings.

A thousand positions are said to be in serious jeopardy once the jobs retention programme is over next month.

But Butlin's say a decision has yet to be made regarding what happens next.

An email sent to staff suggests employees either take paid holiday if they have any remaining, or unpaid leave if not.

The company said: "Since we re-opened Butlin's we've worked hard to bring back as many of our team as possible whilst ensuring we're safe and secure.

"There has been no decision made regarding our team who are still furloughed."

A spokesman, meanwhile, told the Sun : "Our aim is to get all of our team back to work as soon as we can.

"We’re disappointed in the irresponsible nature of the BBC’s report about job losses at Butlin’s.

"We are working closely with UK Hospitality and the government to understand the implications of these constantly changing national circumstances."

Butlin's is owned by Bourne Leisure Group, which also operates Haven caravan parks and Warner Leisure Hotels.

The group employs 15,000 members of staff in total.

But before the furlough scheme was announced, they warned that 10,000 jobs would be axed as a result of lockdown.

Bourne Leisure has since secured hundreds of millions of pounds in government support since the outbreak of Covid-19.

A staff member told the BBC: "I can't believe a great British holiday brand, owned by multi-millionaires wants staff to take unpaid leave after furlough."
