Yak being taken for slaughter flees delivery truck, heads for the hills

A yak which was ear-marked for slaughter is on the loose after escaping from a delivery truck and fleeing into the mountains in the US state of Virginia.

Three-year-old Meteor broke free from his trailer in Lovingston on Tuesday to live out his "mountain escape plans", quipped the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast, where the runaway bovid briefly sought shelter.

"We had a special visitor today," Orchard House said on Facebook on Thursday, alongside a video of the yak meandering through its gardens.

"Within minutes of his arrival, we also had four policemen and an animal control officer."

Authorities were no match for Meteor, however, with the fuzzy fugitive managing to evade police.

Despite the promise of "apples and sweet tea", the bed and breakfast has so far been unable to lure the yak back from his "mountain adventure".

"Meteor is still on the loose, and I must admit we are rooting for his mountain escape plans," it joked.

Meteor is unlikely to go to slaughter if he is apprehended, however.

His owner, Robert Cissell, told the BBC the "aloof" yak would "most likely live out his life here with our breeding herd".
