A BUSY train line has closed, leading to commuters facing delays after a car hit a bridge.

The train line between Mauchline and New Cumnock, on the Kilmarnock to Dumfries route, has been closed due to a “vehicle striking a bridge,” Network Rail has said.

ScotRail also confirmed the line closure at around 1.15pm on Wednesday, adding that a full inspection of the bridge needs to be carried out before the train line can be reopened.

The train operator did not add how long services will be affected on the route, but it is understood that commuters are facing delays.

It is understood that the bridge has been damaged in the incident, but to what extent is not clear.

In a statement, a Network Rail spokesperson said: “We've closed the line between Mauchline and New Cumnock on the Kilmarnock to Dumfries line.

“Our engineers are on site inspecting damage to a bridge over the railway caused by a road vehicle. We'll share another update soon.”

A spokesperson for ScotRail added: “We've received reports of a vehicle striking a bridge between Mauchline & New Cumnock.

“At present the line is closed due requiring a full inspection. As soon as we have more information we will update this thread.”
