Busy Tameside railway station set for major improvement in new year

A railway station in Tameside which serves over 110,000 passengers a year is all set for a major upgrade.

Work will take place at Hattersley station in the new year, starting on Monday, January 10.

The station's ticket office will be rebuilt with a new waiting area, toilet, working spaces and seating for passengers.

Tameside leaders are promising a much more modern and comfortable environment for rail passengers - although there will be some disruption while the work takes place.

Coun Warren Bray, Tameside Council executive member for transport and connectivity, said: “This is excellent news for train passengers and residents in Hattersley and shows our commitment to improving transport links across our borough - providing modern infrastructure and a sustainable environment that works for all.

"Upgrading Hattersley ticket office is part of a long-term programme of works that will ensure we can support and improve essential public transport connections throughout Tameside.”

Tameside Council received £750,000 funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to upgrade the station's ticket office.

The station will remain open while work takes place, but the current ticket office will be closed.

Passengers can either buy tickets online, through the Northern app, or at alternative ticket offices - with the nearest locations being Newton for Hyde and Broadbottom.

The number of car parking spaces available at the station will be reduced while work is ongoing, but cycle facilities will not be affected.

The station's Amazon Locker will also be removed while work takes place, but will return in the new ticket office.

It's hoped the work will be complete by the end of next April.

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern, said: “By continuing to upgrade infrastructure across our route we can keep providing passengers with the best possible experience using our trains.

"This new ticket office in Hattersley will provide upgraded facilities for passengers from the area where they can also continue using vital community services like the Amazon Locker.”

Tameside Council says the station is expected to serve a higher number of passengers in the years ahead, as the local area continues to grow and more people switch to sustainable modes of transport.
