Busy south Manchester road closed after tree crashes onto the carriageway in high winds

A tree is blocking part of a busy south Manchester road after crashing onto the street during high winds.

Alexandra Road South is currently closed after the large tree fell on Friday afternoon (May 22).

Images from the scene show that the tree - which fell from Alexandra Park - appears to have damaged part of a wall and some barriers.

The incident happened close to Wellington Road, outside St Bede's College, in Whalley Range.

Nobody was harmed in the incident, council officials said.

A Manchester Council spokesperson said: "Council officers are working with Greater Manchester Police, after a tree was brought down by high winds at Alexandra Park.

“Alexandra Road South has been temporarily closed to traffic and pedestrians in the interests of safety until the tree can be cleared."
