Busy shopping scenes in Nottingham city centre on day of Covid-19 tier decision

Shoppers have descended into Nottingham city centre on the day a Covid-19 tier decision is made.

The busy scenes were photographed on Clumber Street on Wednesday December 30, just before Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirms which areas will change tiers in the House of Commons.

An announcement is expected to be made at 3pm - after MPs vote on the Brexit deal - which will determine which Tier Nottinghamshire is in for at least the next fortnight.

The whole of Nottinghamshire is currently under Tier 3 rules.

Covid-19 rates released on Wednesday morning (December 30) showed all areas in the county have active case numbers lower than the national average.

However, many areas in the country already under Tier 4 restrictions do have rates currently lower than areas in Nottinghamshire.

And council leaders in Nottinghamshire are hopeful the county will remain in Tier 3 and that "common sense will prevail".

If Nottinghamshire is moved up to Tier 4 it would mean all 'non-essential' stores would have to close, including personal care and indoor entertainment.
