Busy scenes in Nottingham as people head to city centre bars and restaurants on second weekend after reopening

Nottingham city centre was teeming with people as the sun attracted more revellers to pubs, bars and restaurants during the second weekend after venues reopened.

Staff at some bars and restaurants said they had noticed a rise in customers due to the hotter weather, with some saying there was more walk-ins than bookings.

Hockley had a very alfresco vibe as people lounged out on chairs in the street with beers and cocktails while some other the areas of the city were quieter on Saturday afternoon.

Prashant Jaiswal, owner of Indian street food restaurant Viva in Hockley said people needed to support more small and local businesses through the good weather.

He said: "We opened a month before the lockdown. For a new business to open up and then close a month later was quite hard. It was really quiet last weekend.

"This weekend has really picked up and I think people want to come out and I think the sunshine has helped. Last weekend there was not that many sitting out.

"People have to consciously realise it is the small and local business that need their attention and support.

"All the big businesses are full but some small businesses are not so much."

Bar and meatball joint 31K, also in Hockley, said they were delighted to see more people out on the streets and enjoying the warm weather.

Their outside seating area was packed with people enjoying drinks.

Joe Hague, managing director, said: "It is really nice because last weekend people were a a bit too afraid to go out.

"The milestone has been set and people are starting to realise that places are open and they are safe.

"If the weather is there it helps especially if you have outdoor seating.

"I think if it is raining people might not come out but with the sun people want to be out the house.

"We had more bookings last weekend but now we are getting more walk-ins."

The Bell Inn pub, which just reopened this week, said it had been "steady" with people enjoying both the inside seating area as well as the street beer garden.

Old Market Square also had droves of people gathering and sitting on the steps enjoying the sunshine, with queues for some of the shops.

Adam Wood, senior promotions manager for Rock City and the Rescue Rooms, said the Yard Bar, which has been built on the Rock City car park, had been fully booked both weekends.

"It has not been as hectic as last weekend but there are definitely people who can't wait to get out of the house, get out with friends and have a drink.

"When the sun is out people want to use our outdoor area and we have put a lot of effort into it.

"We have built a beer garden just for that. We have sold out both weekends.

"We are doing three sessions a day and we are doing 100 people a session. I think people appreciate that we have built something for them."

Julien Latil, who manages cocktail bar 400 Rabbits in Hurts Yard, said they had been very lucky through the week as people ventured out to visit them.

"We have been lucky to be busy all week. I think it has been raining most of this week but now the sun is out so we should have a very good weekend," he added.
