Busy road to stay closed for several more hours over stability concerns

Emergency services have said a busy road will remain closed for several more hours because of safety concerns after a lorry crash this morning.

The lorry smashed into a gantry on the A562 Speke Road in Widnes at 6.39am.

Cheshire Police said the road is expected to remain closed for several hours as they continue to check the gantry's structural stability following the incident.

There are no reports of any injuries but recovery work continues to take place while the gantry is checked for structural stability, said police.

Police attended the scene and found a HGV had collided with a gantry near to Hale Road slip road.

Images show the container appears to have come off the lorry after it crashed into the gantry which shows directions to Liverpool.

Videos shared with the ECHO also showed debris from the lorry blocking the road.

As a result of the incident the westbound carriageway remains closed and a number of diversions are in place, including:

  • The A533 Mersey Gateway Bridge is closed westbound from the Queensway junction. Traffic is diverted via Queensway onto the M62.
  • The Silver Jubilee Bridge is closed northbound. Traffic is diverted via Waterloo Road, onto Queensway and then onto the M62.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At 6.39am on Friday 3 December Police were called to reports of a collision on the A562 Speke Road, Widnes.

"Officers attended the scene and found that a HGV had collided with a gantry near to the Hale Road slip road.

"There are no reports of any injuries but recovery work will need to take place and the gantry will need to be checked for structural stability.

"Emergency Services are working hard to clear the closure as soon as possible but the road is expected to be closed for several hours."
