Busy road in Co Kerry reopens after firefighters extinguish gorse blaze near Killarney

A busy road in Co Kerry has reopened after firefighters successfully put out a gorse fire near Killarney.

The Border Works Road - one of the main roads out of Killarney, was closed for several hours on Monday evening after a massive gorse fire broke out nearby.

The blaze broke out at around 5:45pm on Monday and was eventually brought under control at 10.30pm last night.

Five units from Killorglin and Killarney Fire Services took more than four hours to extinguish the blaze and were assisted by an Air Corps helicopter.

Crew of firemen trapped by flames while battling huge gorse fire in Donegal  

Several gorse fires have broken out across the country over the past few days, with firefighters battling blazes in Dublin, Clare, Wicklow and Donegal.

Air Corps helicopters were called in to help firefighters battle a large gorse fire near Annagry and Loughanure in Co Donegal on Monday afternoon, with crews working for several hours to extinguish the blaze.
