Busy road closed as bus left with scaffolding on its roof

A busy road was left closed in both directions after a bus was left with toppled scaffolding on its roof.

A fire service spokesman said the Stagecoach bus was involved in a "collision" with scaffolding in Gelli Road in Ton Gelli at around 12.40pm Saturday.

Laurie Ellis, who is local to the area, passed by the bus at around 12.46pm and said there were passengers still on board.

"I didn't see what happened, not sure if it fell on it or hit it, passengers were still on there. We had to drive past very quick because the scaffolding was wobbling," said Laurie, who added she feared the scaffolding would collapse.

Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene to make sure it remains safe while waiting for the scaffolding company to get there.

An eyewitness at the scene told us: "Four workmen are currently being assisted by the fire service to take down the scaffolding. There is a really big crowd watching. It looks like there is some broken glass on the floor near the bus."

Johnny Stoddart, who was also passing by, said the road was blocked both ways.

Bus company Stagecoach tweeted out that they will not be able to serve the area until the obstruction is cleared.

Google Maps is showing very slow traffic along Gelli Road between Pentre Post Office and The Crispy Cod. The road around the site also appeared to be moving slowly on Saturday afternoon as drivers sought an alternative route.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 12.40pm to one public bus in collision with some scaffolding.

"The scaffolding company is on its way to make repairs to the scaffolding and the service are in attendance to make sure that everything is safe."

People at the scene claimed the bus' wing mirror clipped the scaffolding, causing it to fall, but this hasn't been confirmed.
