Busy Lanarkshire road blocked after huge tree blown down by high winds

A major road in North Lanarkshire was blocked for hours yesterday after high winds blew down a huge tree.

Drivers were left stunned as the felled tree covered two lanes of the busy B7071 Glasgow Road in Uddingston, at the junction to the Redstones Hotel.

Police attended and motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area, reports Lanarkshire Live.

One witness who lives opposite the scene told Lanarkshire Live: "One of the neighbours caught the incident on CCTV and the tree miraculously fell suddenly during a gap in the traffic. One second it was up, next it was down with no warning.

"I was working in the back garden and the wind was gusting very badly, I then heard the crash and saw the cars stopping in Glasgow Road so went to investigate.

"Police were on the scene in minutes and South Lanarkshire Council tree surgeons arrived about 45 minutes later."

Another image from the scene shows how the tree has torn down cables during the incident.

It is understood the road has been cleared and expected to reopen.
