Busy Hamilton road closed in both directions after woman is struck by a vehicle

A busy Hamilton road has been closed off this afternoon after a woman was struck by a vehicle.

Police have closed Townhead Street in both directions between A723 Blackswell Lane and Barncluith Road, as a result of the serious accident.

A diversion is in operation but motorists are being reminded to expect delays and to allow extra time for their journey.

The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Parents of pupils at Holy Cross High School were notified via text and the school app that the Whitelaws bus service that takes the children to and from the school to the Ferniegair area of the town has arranged an alternative drop-off on one service.

Other parents were being asked to arrange alternative collection from school this afternoon.

The message from head teacher John Reilly read: "As a result of a serious road traffic incident, the school bus (Whitelaws) going through Ferniegair, will have to drop the Ferniegair children at the bus stop near the train station.

"However, it is not possible to safely drop the children who live in Avon Road at their usual drop-off location.

"Would parents/carers please make alternative arrangements with your child to collecr them from the school building.

"May I apologise for the short notice, but we have only just been informed of this situation.

"Many thanks for your co-operation."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 13.35pm on Monday, August 16, officers were called to a report of a woman struck by a vehicle on Townhead Street, Hamilton.

"The road has been closed and officers are at the scene.

"The injured woman has been taken by ambulance to hospital."
