Busy Edinburgh road to close for six weeks to 'reduce the risk of future flooding'

Drivers on Edinburgh's busy Craigleith Road will face diversions for six weeks as Scottish Water close part of the street to traffic for emergency work following the capital's monumental rainfall earlier this month.

The work has begun today to redirect a sewer main in the street, with a section of road closed between numbers 137 to 111.

Flooding has occurred in the area at times of very heavy rainfall and Scottish Water say that the work on Craigleith Road 'will help protect properties in the area.'

According to the council-run social media account Edinburgh Travel News local diversions will be signposted.

A Scottish Water spokeswoman said: “This emergency work is needed to help reduce the risk of future flooding at times of heavy rain. We will do all we can to keep disruption, including noise, to a minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Work will be carried out Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm with no weekend work planned.

Edinburgh was hit with nearly half of its average July rainfall in under an hour on Sunday July 5. Locals shared videos of shocking flooding across the capital, with cars abandoned on streets amongst the downpour. Homes, businesses and even the St James Quarter battled to keep water out.
