Three rushed to hospital after head-on collision at busy East Lothian crossroads

Three people have been rushed to hospital following a head-on collision at a busy East Lothian crossroads.

The incident occurred on Edinburgh Road at the junction with Newhailes Road, Musselburgh, which was was shut down around 10:30am on Wednesday morning.

Alerting motorists at the time, Edinburgh Travel News tweeted: "Musselburgh - Edinburgh Road closed BOTH ways at the Shell Garage due to an RTC (between Newhailes Avenue and Newhailes Road).

"Emergency services are in attendance. Traffic being diverted. It's slow westbound from Lochend Road."

Police have since confirmed that three people, two males and one female, were rushed to hospital following the collision and the road has since re-opened to traffic.

An image from the scene shows two vehicles with heavy damage having collided at the busy junction. A Scottish Fire and Rescue crew have also been pictured at the scene to assist their emergency service partners.

Several Lothian Bus services were also diverted in the area due to the crash.

A service alert for the 26 read: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Musselburgh at Newhailes. Services are instead diverted via Milton Road, A1, Wallyford at Salters Road and Haddington Road in both directions until further notice.

"Due to increased traffic on this diversion buses are also subject to delays."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said : “Officers attended a two vehicle crash on Edinburgh Road, Newhailes, Musselburgh at 9.50am on Tuesday, 21 December, 2022. Two male drivers and a female passenger were taken to hospital and the road has re-opened.”
