Busy Bristol roundabout closed after lorry overturns

One of the busiest roundabouts in Bristol has been closed for most of the afternoon after a lorry tipped over onto its side there.

The transporter lorry with a container tipped over on the Willy Wicket roundabout in Downend at around 1.15pm today, Tuesday.

The roundabout is the main junction between the A4174 Avon Ring Road and the A432 road that connects Bristol with Yate and much of South Gloucestershire.

One local resident said the roundabout was shut westbound, but First Bus said the roundabout was completely closed and so were directing its services into South Gloucestershire - the Y1 bus to Yate, as well as the m3 Metrobus from Emersons Green via Downend Village and Cleeve Hill instead.

Traffic sources suggested that the roundabout was closed for vehicles accessing from the east and Emerson’s Green and, even with a coronavirus lockdown in place, traffic was congested all the way back to the Lyde Green roundabout.

Recovery teams were on the scene and have initially removed the container in a bid to lighten the load ahead of righting the lorry itself.
