Busy bees create a buzz around rural life museum's Go Wild in Spring event

Bees take centre stage at the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride this weekend in a series of fun family activities.

The important role of bees in nature will be explored as part of the Kittochside attraction's Go Wild in Spring programme.

Visitors will get the chance to see the museum’s bee hive, dress up as a bee, learn some bee facts in the story corner, see some of the equipment used by beekeepers and to adopt a bee.

A Waggle Dance workshop will demonstrate how bees communicate with one another when they find pollen and families will also be able to create their own honeycomb bee window decoration with the help of artist Lorraine Mackie.

A candle-making workshop will teach children about beeswax and its uses and features the chance to create a pillar candle to decorate and take home.

The event is one in a series of family events across National Museums Scotland supported by Players of Postcode Lottery this year.

The museum's general manager, Shirley Maciver, said: " National Museums Scotland is committed to attracting new audiences across our family of museums through an events programme that aims to engage, educate and inspire.

"This year’s bee-themed Go Wild in Spring programme at the National Museum of Rural Life will be a great way for our visitors to learn about nature and our rural environment and we’re extremely grateful to the players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their support for this and the other family events they will be funding this year."

The event runs till Friday of this week from 11am until 4pm and returns on Tuesday, April 9 till Friday, April 12.

Admission is £8/£7 for adults and £5.50 for children (under 5s free). Family tickets cost £23 (two adults and two children). National Museums Scotland Members/National Trust Scotland members/National Art Pass members go free.
