Bustling city market giving dignity to those in need of help

On a rainy square off Lodge Lane in south Liverpool there is a lively crowd of people chatting and picking out food items.

This may look like the kind of busy little market that used to be commonplace across this city, but it is a little different.

This week the Fans Supporting Foodbanks team - known for their work collecting food and supplies on match days - brought their mobile pantry down to Toxteth for what could be the start of a special new partnership.

While foodbanks remain a crucial lifeline for far too many people in Liverpool, the fans group are keen to bring in a new method of tackling food poverty that also celebrates communities and removes some of the stigma sometimes felt by those in need of help.

Those attending the first Lodge Lane pantry market are asked to pay £3.50 that allows them to pick 10 items worth around £20 from a refrigerated truck.

Looking around and listening to people chatting, laughing and choosing their items it certainly doesn't feel like a foodbank.

West Derby MP Ian Byrne is one of the co-founders of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, which started running its new mobile pantry service in areas of north Liverpool last year.

He said: "We've always wanted to expand throughout the city and just thought this was a perfect location.

"It is one of the poorest wards in the city but it's such a great, diverse community and we have had one of the best first days here.

"You can see it's bustling, people are chatting, it doesn't feel like a food bank and that's the point - we want to get rid of this stigma.

"This is a market essentially, but one that fights food poverty - we think it can become a major regular event in Lodge Lane.

"We've always set out to unite communities and this is such a proud moment for us."

The arrival of the pantry in Tiber Square off Lodge Lane came about through a partnership with the Greenhouse Project, based next door in Tiber Street - which offers educational services for the local community.

Chair Paul Khan said: "It's amazing to see this today. At the Greenhouse Project we provide educational services in this community and we just thought it was a great match with Fans Supporting Foodbanks to get the pantry down here.

"We're putting money back into the local economy, using produce from shops up and down the road and in the local area - it's a great thing.

"We know this area is high up in terms of deprivation - so this is really needed here."

And the pantry was a big hit with locals on its first day.

Pensioner neighbours Carol and Kevin were just two of several hundred people that came along and became members of the market, which will now be a regular fixture in Lodge Lane.

Carol said: "I think it's really good, I'm a pensioner and I'm disabled - money can be a bit tight when all your bills and everything are taken out of your pension.

"It would be lovely to see this here every week."

Kevin added: ""It's a good thing, it's going to save me a few quid so I would definitely come along again. Just got a few supplies and it will keep me going for a bit."

The pantry will be turning up in Tiber Square every Thursday from 10am until 12pm for the next three years thanks to a long-term donation from the Spirit of Shankly group, the official supporters union for Liverpool FC fans.

The union has committed to full support the project for at least the next three years in a move which it believes will help feed as many as 600 people each week.
