Busman's holiday

A new customised double-decker bus will be launched to serve afternoon tea and dinner while cruising past attractions through central Bangkok.

The Thai Bus Food Tour is the brainchild of Lapana Sompradit, managing director of Grand Booking (Thailand), a tour and travel company.

His vision is to offer a unique experience to foreign visitors. The bus features tables to accommodate 24 guests, free Wi-Fi, USB charger stations, a flat TV screen on every table, CCTV, GPS and a toilet.

The service is currently being piloted. The route starts at River City and will pass famous sites in the capital, including Hua Lamphong railway station, China Town, the Grand Palace and the Giant Swing.

There will be two tours a day. The afternoon tea session is 2pm-4.30pm and the dinnertime session, featuring a six-course Thai set menu, runs from 5.30pm until 8pm.

Food and snacks will be selected from famous restaurants in Bangkok.

Prices per person for the afternoon tea, featuring 18 types of snack, will start at 1,190 baht for children under 12 years old and 1,490 baht for adults. Prices for the dinner will start at 1,390 baht for children and 1,890 baht for adults.

The bus is set to be officially launched soon. It will also be available for hire to host a private parties or lunch or meetings.

AIRLINES UPDATE

- Bangkok Airways has launched "Bangkok Airways Happy Weekdays" promotion. It offers a chance for passengers who purchase domestic tickets and travel on Monday to Thursday from now until July 31 to win lucky draw prizes.

To be eligible, passengers must register at http://bangkokair.com/weekdayspecial before Aug 2.

On offer are 50 prizes of two round trip tickets to five of the airline's most popular domestic destinations: Samui, Chiang Rai, Krabi, Lampang and Trat (departing from Bangkok).

- Qatar Airways will serve Thai meals cooked by internationally-acclaimed Thai chef Ian Kittichai. His menu will use local produce for his signature selection such as kaeng rawaeng nuea (slow cooked beef short rib with grilled banana peppers in a southern-style curry), and chuchee goong (tiger prawns in red curry sauce) served with thinly sliced yod maphrao (heart of palms) and bok choy.

The new menu will be available to First and Business passengers travelling from Bangkok to Doha, starting on July 1.

The airline currently operates 49 weekly flights to Bangkok.

HOTEL DEALS & UPDATE

- Minor Hotels will launch the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management in Bangkok and Chon Buri in September 2020.

The institute will offer certificates, diplomas and bachelor degrees in hospitality management in academic association with Les Roches Global Hospitality Education, a leading private hospitality school founded in Switzerland.

- X2 Pattaya Oceanphere has been opened

Located on Sukhumvit Road in Sattahip district, Chon Buri, the resort features 59 pool villas with a choice of one and two bedrooms which can accommodate up to six guests, ranging in size from 150m² to 270m². Each villa has spacious living areas, bathrooms, a kitchen, gazebo, terrace and private pool.

The resort also has one restaurant, rooftop pool with pool bar, fitness centre and spa.

- Pimalai Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta in Krabi has launched a five-year environmental plan to make the property more environmentally friendly.

It aims to reduce electricity consumption by 15%, daily water use by 10%, carbon footprint by 10% and waste by 5%.

To achieve these targets, the resort has implemented a series of actions including using low-energy LED lighting, installing efficient boilers and new water meters, reorganising the resort's transport schedule and launching the installation of a Biogas Plant.

The facility can produce methane gas from 200kg of kitchen waste per day. The gas is used as fuel in the kitchen. It also works with marine biologists on clownfish release and coral propagation programmes and takes part in regular beach cleaning exercises.
