A group of students prevented a Chinese tourist from committing suicide while they were busking in Bangkok on Monday night.

Nine students of Wat Sutthiwararam School were busking under the King Taksin Bridge by the Chao Phraya River to raise fund for their school's annual talent show, when they became suspicious of a Chinese man who donated 1,500 yuan (7,000 baht) for the band.

Believing the donation to be far too generous, the students followed him to return the money, but the man handed them his mobile phone instead, saying he wouldn't be needing it anymore as his father and grandfather had just died.

Believing the man's response signalled an intention to commit suicide from the bridge above them, the students rushed to surround and console him until police from Yannawa station arrived.

Police said the man was known to have shown an intention to commit suicide before, but authorities had managed to talk him out of taking his own life.
