Businessman shuts up shop after 50 years of selling menswear to Glasgow

Brian Forbes was just 16 when he started dressing the men folk of Glasgow.

Fast forward 50 years and he's preparing to head off into retirement, but he's doing so knowing there's a lot more dapper people kicking about in this city thanks to all his hard work.

Starting out in G A Dunn and Co in Argyle Street when he was a fresh-faced youngster straight out of Strathbungo Senior school, Brian went on to become one of the go-to advisers for any male looking for a decent outfit, or something a bit different.

Remembering when record crowds filled Hampden in 1937 to watch Scotland beat England

Over the years he moved about a bit, honing his craft at stores in Glasgow, Bearsden and Milngavie, getting valuable experience at exhibitions in London and strengthening his reputation as one of the most stylish men in the west (not an official accolade, but we've met him and we can verify this as fact).

But for the past couple of decades he's been firmly ensconced in his much loved Crow Road shop , which he's preparing to close for good next week.

"I've had some great experiences," Brian told Glasgow Live, as we caught up with him ahead of his impending retirement.

"It was different when I started out but it was always brilliant, people would come from all over to the shops I worked in and it was exciting to go to London, where I'd do the buying, it was a different world."

Hot weather arrives in time for Easter weekend as Glasgow faces mini heatwave

The dad-of four's Broomhill business is always mobbed, probably due to the Aladdin's Cave of sartorial treasures he's had stocked up in there, with an array of vivid colours, classy brands and amazing patterns as far as the eye can see.

So it's no wonder his closing down sale has gone down a storm with loyal customers, as bittersweet as it may be.

Brian added: "We've always been mobbed.

"When customers come in, I give them the full experience and that's probably why. It's one-to-one, I choose the clothes, I find them something a wee bit different that they might not pick themselves.

"It's never been about the money, I just loved it and was passionate about helping people, I wasn't very good at school, I was just always interested in clothing and I knew I could make a difference in people's lives.

"And everything was poured back into the shop, that's why we've always had so much stuff, because I just keep buying and buying. "

He's dressed most of the city's population as well as those from further afield, including famous faces and footballers (Brian told us the most well-kent he's served is probably Sven-Goran Eriksson) but he said every customer got the same treatment.

And though he's looking forward to some much-deserved free time in the future, he'll never forget his past.

Brian, who lives in Bishopbriggs with wife Eileen, added: "I've loved every minute, when I think back to how many people I've dressed over the years I can't quite believe it.

"And I will spot people in a pub who bought a suit off me maybe 20 years ago and I'll remember them, I might not remember the person, but I will remember the clothes. People wear my clothes all over and I can tell instantly.

"I will miss it but it's time.

"I love being in the great outdoors and have two grandkids, so I'll be kept pretty busy."

Brian Forbes at 263 Crow Road closes next Friday, April 26.

You'll be missed, pal, but your legacy will more than live on!
