Businesses to face €500 fine if they break new single-use plastic ban proposed by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown council

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown could become the first local authority to ban certain single-use plastics with businesses facing a hefty fine if disobeyed.

It has warned that if the ban is implemented, retailers and organisations could face a fine of up to €500 if they ignore the rule.

Supermarkets, takeaways and other food businesses caught using plastic containers, straws, utensils and bottles would received fines.

These plastics would have to be replaced with biodegradable options according to The Irish Times.

Speaking about the potential ban, Fine Gael councillor Barry Ward said: "Single-use plastics are a major part of the material in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown that goes into waste, and many of them (e.g soft plastics) cannot be recycled, meaning that they are incinerated along with other "general waste" at the Poolbeg Incinerator."

"This is the first step and councillors will have an opportunity to consider and amend the draft bye-law."
