Businesses in Gateshead fined for not following coronavirus safety measures

A number of businesses in Gateshead have been fined after breaking coronavirus safety measures.

The fixed penalty notices were issued after Gateshead Council enforcement officers visited more than 1,000 premises to ensure they were following the Government's regulations.

Among the businesses affected was The Plough Inn in Kibblesworth which was fined £1,000 after a member of the public complained that there was a party being held in the pub, with customers allowed to freely mingle.

The Three Tuns in Sheriff Hill was also fined £1,000 for not preventing groups of people gathering and was fined another £2,000 for serving alcohol after hours.

And two barbers in Coatsworth Road were also ordered to pay £1,000 for not recording customer details for contact tracing and failing to clean surfaces.

A Gateshead Council spokesperson said: "Council officers say they will continue to work with the police and react to complaints from the public about businesses operating unsafely.

"Gateshead Council has proactively visited more than a thousand businesses since the new regulations came into force to provide help and advice on operating in a Covid-secure way.

"The majority of premises visited were found to be following all the necessary procedures.

"However, council officers say they will continue to work with the police and react to complaints from the public about businesses operating unsafely. "
