Business Secretary Alok Sharma tests negative for coronavirus after showing symptoms in House of Commons

Business Secretary Alok Sharma has tested negative for coronavirus after showing symptoms in the House of Commons yesterday.

The secretary of state took to Twitter to share the news tonight (Thursday evening).

Fears were raised that prime minister Boris Johnson may have to isolate after the pair met in No 10 for a 45-minute socially distanced meeting earlier in the week.

Mr Sharma had been seen mopping his brow at the despatch box during the second reading of the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Bill.

He began self isolating and took a test.

The results came back negative today.

Taking to social media, the business secretary said: "Huge thanks to everyone for their really kind messages over the last 24 hours and my grateful thanks also to the parliamentary authorities and Speaker for their support yesterday.

"Just had results in and my test for Covid-19 was negative."

Prime minister Boris Johnson returned to work on April 27 after he became seriously ill with coronavirus.

He became so ill with the disease that he needed hospital treatment.

He spent three days in intensive care after his condition dramatically deteriorated.
