Business Secretary Alok Sharma tests negative for Coronavirus

Business Secretary Alok Sharma has tested negative for coronavirus after self-isolating with concerns he had fallen ill with the disease.

The result will provide relief to many MPs who were in Parliament with him on Wednesday and to the Prime Minister and Chancellor who had a 45-minute meeting with the Business Secretary on Tuesday.

There were fears that under the NHS test and trace system if Mr Sharma had tested positive, the contacts asked to self isolate could include the Prime Minister, the Chancellor and a number of other MPs.

The Business Secretary spoke in Parliament on Wednesday where he began wiping his brow and looked like he was feverish at the despatch box.

In the wake of Mr Sharma displaying symptoms, furious MPs have demanded that Jacob Rees-Mogg show some "House of Commons sense" and reverse his decision to force MP to return to Parliament in person.

But Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg defended MPs queuing to vote on Tuesday as being their "democratic duty" and said "most members" followed social distancing.

MPs said that Mr Sharma's case highlighted the obvious risk in spreading the virus.
