Business owner hits out at 'mindless vandalism' after series of windows smashed in city road

A business owner has been left facing a bill of up to £500 after windows at several buildings were smashed during one 12-hour period.

Police are investigating reports of criminal damage at two shops and a flat in Alfreton Road, Radford.

Some nearby empty buildings in the area were also vandalised, such as the former Ben Bowers restaurant in Canning Circus. It is not yet known if all of the incidents are connected.

Michael Woolnough, owner at the Motorists Centre in Alfreton Road said he was "disappointed" when he arrived at work to find the damage to the shop windows.

"There's not much you can say really, it's just mindless vandalism," he said.

"I've been here 20 years, and it was bad in the beginning because we kept products in the window, but when we moved them back, it stopped.

"These panels of glass could cost anywhere between £300 and £500 to replace.

"Maybe with CCTV around here, we can find out who did it."

The front door was damaged at the nearby Al-Mandi takeaway restaurant and flats around Canning Circus were also affected.

Adam Marshall, 21, who has recently moved into the Canning Circus area, discovered a broken window in his living room.

The IT technician said: "There was glass all over the floor, on the inside.

"At first I thought it was a targeted attack so I was worried, but I spoke to some other people and they said it happened to them too.

"I don't really understand why anyone would do this."

Sergeant Bruce Clarke, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’re investigating reports of criminal damage to two shops and a flat in Alfreton Road, Radford.

“It’s believed windows of these properties were damaged between 2pm on Saturday (13 July 2019) and 12.30am today (Monday 15 July 2019).

“Our enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing, including checking CCTV in the area, and we’re appealing for anyone who saw what happened, any drivers who may have recorded dash-cam footage or anyone who has any information which could help our investigation to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 155 of July 15, 2019, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
