Business opportunity in 1860s sandstone church in Woodville

Images supplied

Enquiry has come locally, out of Newcastle and from Sydney for a sandstone church built in 1864 in the Hunter region that is now privately owned and operated as a wedding venue, according to Rhonda Nyquist.

The PRD Hunter Valley agent is selling the Woodville property at 235 Clarence Town Road with a guide of $995,000. It comprises Woodville All Saints Church and church hall on just under two acres of land with a two-road frontage and a growing business.

"It's something quite unusual to have a 1860s stone-built church in such good condition available and in such an idyllic setting," Ms Nyquist said.

"Woodville village is just beautiful and it's only two minutes from Maitland. The potential for someone to take it to the next level is huge."

Rich history

Steven Dorman, of Dowling Property Group Hamilton, is selling a building which operated as the Marquis of Midlothian Hotel from 1885 then later served as a general store at 42-44 Robert Street in Jesmond.

Now the property is a large, four-bedroom, two-bathroom home that has been modernised without forgoing its traditional charm and is being sold through expressions of interest.

The home occupies a corner block and Mr Dorman said there was the opportunity to also purchase the home at the rear (2 Ralph Street) and the potential to construct a dwelling between the two existing dwellings, subject to council approval.

It is open for inspection at 10.45am on Saturday. A price guide has not been disclosed.

NEW LIFE: This 1880s building in Jesmond has been a pub and a general store in its time before being converted into a large residence on a corner block.
