Business demand boosts worldwide PC shipments

"About 41.2 million [PCs] were shipped in the quarter, a 16.5% increase from the year-ago period, according to Framingham, Mass.-based IDC. Gartner Inc, which uses slightly different measurement methods, reported that 45.3 million units were shipped, a 13.4% increase from the previous year," reports AP.

"Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, remained the worldwide PC leader, increasing its market share to 18.6% with 7.7 million units shipped in the quarter — 1.7 million units above the previous year, according to IDC."

The top 5 worldwide suppliers were Dell, HP, IBM, Fujitsu, and Acer, which replaced Toshiba for fifth place. The top five in the US were Dell, HP, IBM, eMachines, and Gateway.
