Business chiefs have backed rejecting a blanket £30,000 minimum salary threshold for immigrants arriving in Britain after Brexit.

Earnings are still expected to be a significant part of the Government’s proposed new Australian style points-based system for immigration.

But decisions on applications will also be influenced by other factors such as educational qualification levels, type of job being sought, ability to speak English and possibly a willingness to work in particular regions.

“We are delighted the Prime Minister recognises that a £30,000 salary threshold would jeopardise key sectors of our economy, such as retail, hospitality, and construction,” said Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of London First.

“When the Immigration White Paper is published in March, it is vital that the Government designs a system that not only provides the control that is desired, but also reflects the needs of all parts of the economy.”

Conservative MPs are divided over the previously proposed £30,000 minimum salary barrier.

North Dorset MP Simon Hoare tweeted: “We need an immigration system that delivers for ALL sections of the economy.

“Controlling our own borders doesn’t mean closing them.”

However, former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith stressed the Government should be “cautious” on changes to the salary threshold as it could make it more difficult to control immigration levels.

The new system will aim to allow the UK to continue to attract high-skilled workers while clamping down on those with low skills.
