Business chief warns Cornish firms to be ready for all Brexit scenarios

Businesses are being warned to prepare for any benefits or pitfalls of Brexit.

Toby Parkins, the president of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, said he was concerned that some firms are only preparing based on their own opinions on Brexit.

Mr Parkins added there were a lot of people who are "sick and tired of the whole thing" but this was leaving some businesses not to take any measures at all.

Mr Parkins made the comments at a Brexit preparedness debate at the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Leadership Board.

He said: "Because people don't know which way it is going to go some people are just saying let's wait and see, but I think it is important that business that are going to be affected, that they don't just wait and see and that they do at least plan ahead, particularly businesses that are exporting.

The Government has issued a list of more than 60 pieces of advice for businesses ahead of Brexit (Stefan Rousseau/PA Wire)

"These are organisations that, potentially, could be significantly affected. I talked to a business the other day that bought a fleet of lorries just in case something happens. You can't just change your transport strategy at last minute, you have to take precautions.

"But every organisation needs to be aware of what steps they may need to take if a certain position and Brexit occurs.

"We just need to encourage businesses to consider what the worst case and best case scenario is so they are at least aware and can prepare for the actions they might need to take."
