Business Brief (Aug. 5): China Mandates Strict Safety Rules for Self-Driving Cars

Autonomous driving standards

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued mandatory national safety standards for autonomous driving, effective July 1, 2027.

The rules apply to Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles, excluding self-parking features. The standards mandate that an autonomous system’s safety level must be no lower than that of a qualified human driver, establishing corporate responsibility for vehicle safety management, human-machine interaction and testing.

Consumer electronics prices rise

Prices for smartphones and computers are rising in China. The increase is driven by a combination of AI applications consuming memory chip production capacity and surging raw material costs.

The price increases represent a structural cost shift in the AI era rather than a short-term fluctuation.
