Business booming for fitness equipment suppliers as Irish people try to keep fit during coronavirus lockdown

Business is booming for fitness equipment suppliers as people try to keep in shape during the lockdown.

Gyms around the country have had to shut their doors because of the Covid-19 crisis.

This has left about 480,000 members needing to keep up their fitness levels elsewhere and many are splashing the cash on their own equipment.

Getting your hands on an exercise bike or even a skipping rope has become difficult with sales rocketing for gym equipment suppliers.

One such business is Apollo Fitness, based in Waterford, who are delivering equipment around the country.

"The demand is huge at the moment as people try to keep fit at home," Jeff Power, who is part of their marketing team, told the Irish Mirror.

"We were quite lucky that before the lockdown, we had a big supply of stock in our warehouse, so we were prepared in a way.

"But at the moment, it is a continual flow between us and couriers, and everything is flying out the door.

"Dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, plates, free weights - it is all in very high demand.

"It is hard to say when gyms will open, and while we are still working on the commercial of the business, our home fitness business is growing exponentially in recent weeks."

It is a similar story for Custom Gym Equipment who base themselves in Tralee, Kerry.

Owner Svajunas Jonavicius told the Irish Mirror: "It is much, much busier than before and it's mainly home equipment: squat racks, barbells, plates, dumbbells, kettlebells.

"And all small gym equipment like fitness mats, power bands - all of these small things are flying out the door.

"We are getting to 200-300% more orders than we would have before."

With so many businesses badly suffering during the lockdown, Svajunas recognises that he is lucky to be involved in one that is flourishing.

"Depending on the time, somebody always wins and somebody loses.

"I know those involved in plastics, sanitisers, medical equipment are getting a lot of business, and fitness equipment is one of the few businesses to profit from these times."
