Busiest month on record for supermarkets as we buy £10.8bn of food

March was the busiest month on record for supermarkets up and down the country as sales rose by 20.6% in the last four weeks, new data from Kantar has revealed.

Between March 16 and March 19, 88 per cent of households visited a food store - 42million extra shopping trips in four days.

Shops have sold £10.8bn worth of produce in the last four weeks, with people going to shops more often rather than spending more than they go.

The average shop cost £62.92.

London saw the biggest increase with grocery sales going up 26 per cent.

Katar's Fraser McKevitt said: "With restaurants and cafes now closed, none of us can eat meals on the go any longer and an extra 503 million meals, mainly lunches and snacks, will be prepared and eaten at home every week for the foreseeable future."
