A man missing overnight in bushland in the NSW Hunter Valley has been found safe and well.

Police were called in on Sunday with Michael Chalmers, 41, unable to be located after becoming separated from his fishing companion at Polblue Creek in Moonan Brook, 65km east of Scone, the previous afternoon.

With concerns for Mr Chalmers' welfare the force's dog unit, PolAir and Police Rescue were dispatched and help sought from State Emergency Services volunteers.

Following a large-scale search, he was found safe and well about 11.30am along a nearby road.

Located in subalpine woodland, Polblue Creek is a popular spot for trout fishing and runs through the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops.
