An out-of-control bushfire is burning at emergency warning level north of Perth, threatening homes and lives.

The fire started on Friday near Gray Road in Bindoon, about 84km north of the West Australian capital.

The warning area stretches from Hidaway Drive to the east, Forrest Hills Parade to the south, Teatree Road to the west and Mooliabeenee Road to the north in the western part of Bindoon.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes," the alert reads.

Residents and people in the area should leave if it is still safe to do so, or prepare to shelter in their homes.
