Bushfire in Melbourne's south-east brought under control

Smoke from the fire could be seen over Eastlink near the Dandenong Bypass.

A new bushfire which was briefly threatening lives and homes at Bangholme and Dandenong South, in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, has quickly been brought under control.

The fire started near Harwood Road and Dandenong-Frankston Road in Bangholme.

It is travelling in a northerly direction towards Bangholme and Dandenong South.

An emergency warning was issued for the fire about 6:00pm but was then downgraded to a watch and act less than 15 minutes later.

Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire but people in the area are still being warned to stay close to a building in case conditions change quickly.

One person who called in to local radio said they could see a huge amount of smoke as air cranes and a water bomber were working on the fire.
