Bushfire emergency warning north of Perth

An emergency warning for a bushfire threatening homes in Gingin has been lowered to watch and act. (AAP)

Residents of Gingin, north of Perth are being warned that a bushfire in the townsite is a possible threat to lives and homes.

An emergency warning was issued for the fire late on Wednesday afternoon, which was then downgraded to a watch-and-act level.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the fire is stationary but not contained or controlled, and warned that conditions are changing.

People who are unprepared or plan to leave should do so, while those who plan to stay and defend their property should make final preparations and not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected.

Roads have been closed and motorists asked to avoid the area, to reduce their speed and drive with care due to smoke.

The DFES confirmed there were burn-offs in the area on Wednesday afternoon.
