Bushfire burns 1,800 hectares of national park near Port Macquarie

The fire has burned through approximately 1,780 hectares of coastal heath near Port Macquarie.

Firefighters are using water-bombing aircraft in an attempt to control a fire burning in the Limeburners Creek National Park between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head.

The NSW Rural Fire Service is reporting the fire, 10 kilometres north of Port Macquarie, has already burned approximately 1,780 hectares of coastal heath.

The service has released a watch and act notice for residents in the vicinity of Maria River Road, particularly to the west, advising them to monitor the situation.

Residents were also being advised to avoid the Point Plomer area due to fire activity and firefighting operations.

Although the fire service said there was no immediate threat to homes, residents were being advised to follow their bush fire survival plan and take direction from firefighters in the area.

Rural Fire Service Lower North Coast superintendent Lachlan Ison said there was a proposed backburn in place for the region earlier this morning, but a strong north-easterly pushed the fire further west.

"The fingers of the fire have actually beaten us to the Maria River Road, at this point in time the Maria River Road has been breached," he said.

"We've closed the road and we're sorting out property protection with the ground crews currently in the area."

Mr Ison said residents in the other direction in the North Shore and Port Macquarie area still needed to remain vigilant.

"We've still got a strong northerly effect, as such there was probably some areas that haven't burned directly in that north shore area," he said.

"[Residents] still need to remain very vigilant in that area."

The North Coast Public Health Unit was urging people to take care while smoke from the bushfire is affecting air quality around the area, as smoke particles can effect existing lung conditions.
