Buses stop going through one part of Newport after driver pelted with stones during vandalism attacks

A city's bus route has been temporarily halted after the service was subjected to "vandalism attacks".

Newport Bus, the city's main bus operator, saw three vehicles out of action while they waited for new windows to be fitted after stones were thrown.

A driver was also hit with a stone during one of the attacks.

As a result, the operators have stopped some of the services to the area for a few days.

Newport Bus said: "This decision has been made in consultation with senior staff and has been made in the interest of the safety and wellbeing of our staff and customers.

"The potential ramifications of such incidents are serious. It has been due to good fortune that someone has not been seriously injured in previous attacks.

"Services will return to normal routes on Friday, September 20, but should further issues occur the company may make the decision to remove these services for a longer or more permanent period."

Antisocial behaviour - what is it?

Newport Bus managing director, Scott Pearson, said: "My main concern is for the safety of the our drivers and customers.

"We have started pulling services out of the area in the evening, for two days only at present, to raise awareness as much as for safety.

"We are working closely with Gwent Police who will be providing extra resources in the areas and on the buses.

"The consequences of these actions also mean that the number of available vehicles in our fleet is being reduced, affecting services all around the city."

Gwent Police are investigating anti-social behaviour in the Ringland area of Newport.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "At approximately 6.50pm on Tuesday, September 17 we received reports of a stones being thrown at buses on Hendre Farm Drive.

"The window of the bus was smashed but there were no injuries reported.

"Last week we were called to three reports of youths throwing stones at buses in the Chepstow Road area.

"The incidents happened at approximately 11.50am Friday, September 13, 7.10pm on Wednesday, September 11 and 8.10pm on Thursday, September 12.

"Windows of the buses were damaged and a driver was hit on the head. Their injuries are not believed to be serious."

Officers are investigating these incidents and our enquiries are ongoing.

Local Inspector for Newport East, Martin Cawley said: "We take reports of this nature extremely seriously and we would urge anyone who witnesses these offences to contact us at the time they are happening so we can respond appropriately.

“We are working hard to protect our communities and we will not tolerate the safety of others being put in jeopardy. There will be an increased police presence in the area, including officers travelling on buses. We are engaging with the local community, schools and the transport operators to ensure these people are identified.

“I would also ask parents to talk to their children to remind them of the potential consequences of this type of behaviour.”
