VIOLENCE has erupted in Glasgow between anti-immigration and anti-racism protesters, with disruption to transport and a major police presence.
Buses are being diverted as police attempt to get control of a crowd which has broken away from the Unite the Clans rally taking place at Glasgow Green this morning.
Police chased and held back far-right demonstrators who ran towards an anti-fascist group, with many on both sides wearing masks.
Now, diversions are in place in the city centre for buses and cars, with officers surrounding the far-right group.
The diversion on Hope Street runs from Broomielaw, to York Street, to Argyll Street, then back onto Hope Street.
Police Scotland warned the public to avoid the Oswald Street area, while confirming multiple arrests have been made.
The groups clashed at the Green as police on horses attempted to separate them.
Punches were thrown as the anti-immigration group approached anti-racism campaigners, while projectiles were thrown into the anti-racism crowd.
Helicopters circled the park, one of the city’s busiest, as police managed to separate the groups near Saltmarket in the city centre.
Those taking part in the Unite the Clans rally chanted “send them home” and held placards reading “stop the boats”, as blue smoke billowed from the park.
There were big cheers during a speech in which a protester said “it’s wonderful being white” and “I love being white”.
One man was heard saying: “I’m a Nazi and I love it.”
