Buses diverted and roads closed as protest planned in Manchester today

Disruption is expected to hit Oxford Road and Manchester city centre today as protesters march on the Conservative Party Conference.

The People’s Assembly demonstration begins at 12pm on Sunday (October 3) from Whitworth Park, and will culminate at the Manchester Central convention complex, where the conference opens.

Due to its route, a number of bus diversions are in place, Transport for Greater Manchester says.

From 9am, the 15, 18, 41, 42A, 42B, 42, 50, 53, 85, 85A, 86, 111, 142, 143, 197, 250, 263, V1, V2, X50, and MT1 services will be diverted.

And, from 12pm, the 33, 101, 102, 103, 255, 256, — Freebus 1 and Freebus 2 — will also be disrupted.

Metrolink trams are not affected by the march, but a series of road closures will be in place.

Due to the nature of the disruption, TfGM is asking passengers to check its website or social media channels for more updates on when diversions and closures will be lifted.

A statement said: “From 12pm Sunday 3 October, a protest will take place in Manchester city centre.

“During this time, a number of roads will be closed and, as a result, several bus services will be diverted. Details of these are available below.

“We will continue to update this webpage and social media (@OfficialTfGM) throughout the day, so please keep checking back if you're planning to make a journey.”

Today’s protest is the centrepiece of four days of activism from the People’s Assembly.

The group is calling for a swathe of reforms, including an end to the controversial policing bill, which has been demonstrated against in Manchester already this year.

Other protest events include an ‘in conversation’ session between former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and journalist Gary Younge — on Monday evening.
