Buses attacked by bottles and bricks as services threatened with suspension

Police have hit out at youngsters who have targeted buses by throwing bottles, eggs, bricks and lumps of tarmac.

SPT say they are close to suspending a bus route running from Bellshill to the North Motherwell over concerns for the safety of drivers and passengers.

Officers have slammed the behaviour as 'completely unacceptable and extremely dangerous' while saying suspension of the bus service could have 'devastating' consequences for the local community.

A post shared on the Lanarkshire Police Division Facebook page this morning said: "Over the last two to three weeks, there have been reports of youths throwing bottles/eggs/bricks/lumps of tarmac at buses.

"Driver safety is paramount and SPT have said they are close to suspending the 209 bus route which runs from Bellshill to North Motherwell due to concerns.

"This is completely unacceptable and extremely dangerous for drivers, passengers & pedestrians.

"Bus routes are a lifeline for some and a suspension would be devastating for the local community."
