Bus with passenger on board crashes after driver falls ill at the wheel

A bus driver who fell ill at the wheel was taken to hospital after the bus he was driving crashed into metal fences surrounding a JCB.

Investigations are being carried out after the bus, which had one passenger on board, hit the road digger while coming out of Ellesmere Port Bus Station yesterday afternoon.

Travel operator, Stagecoach, said the driver of the X1 bus service took ill at the wheel while travelling at low speed with a passenger on board.

The driver was taken to hospital to be treated while the passenger was unharmed in the crash and was able to continue their journey on another service.

It’s not known if the JCB’s were being operated at the time and the current condition of the driver is unknown.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach Merseyside said: “A bus on our X1 route was involved in a minor incident yesterday whilst travelling at low speed out of Ellesmere Port Bus Station.

“Safety is our first priority and we are investigating the circumstances involved.

“Early indications are that the driver took ill at the wheel, and he has subsequently been treated in hospital.

“The one passenger on board at the time continued their journey on an alternative service.”
