Bus passengers checked for face mask compliance across Merseyside

People travelling across our region on buses have been praised by officials after more than 9 in 10 were found using face coverings on journeys.

Records from a recent enforcement day by PSCOs show 92% of travellers were using face coverings.

The move was prompted after operators received complaints that some groups, in particular students travelling to school, were not wearing them.

They are mandatory on public transport and studies have found them effective in limiting the spread of coronavirus where social distancing is not possible.

Only those who are medically exempt are allowed to travel without them.

Councillor Liam Robinson, portfolio holder for transport & air quality at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, said the level of compliance with the rules observed by officers was encouraging.

He said: “It’s been hard for everyone, but people’s basic courtesy and shared desire to protect each other has not surprised me but nevertheless been really impressive.

“Now is the time to keep up the good work, we can’t afford to be complacent and I’d stress that we need to continue to follow the rules to help keep our families, friends and communities safe.”

The enforcement day was held jointly by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Merseytravel, transport operators, Merseyside Police and British Transport Police as part of their Covid-19 response work through the Local Resilience Forum.
