Bus Eireann investigating after video of young man 'bus-surfing' in Limerick appears online

Bus Eireann is investigating after a video showing a young man bus surfing was shared online.

The 29-second clip appeared on the Limerick Now Facebook page after it was apparently recorded on St Patrick’s Day.

A post above it read: “Sent in... I’m shocked horrified, and angered at this.

“A young lad risking his life hanging on to the back of a bus today on the Ballinacurra Road. Genuinely lost for words.”

Some people online described the man’s actions as “stupid” and “idiotic”.

Bus Eireann are to make enquiries after a video appearing to show a male bus surfing in Limerick yesterday was shared online (Facebook)

One claimed: “Youngsters nowadays are out of control. He’s just a cheeky brat.”

The video appears to have been recorded from inside a car travelling behind the bus on wet roads.

In the recording, a male voice can be heard saying: “That’s Limerick for you lads.”

In August 2017 distressing footage emerged online of a youth clinging to the outside of a moving Luas in Dublin.

It was captured from the inside and showed a male clinging to the side of it.

The practice known as “scutting” or tram surfing was widely condemned at the time.

In 2018 a woman who sustained a severe brain injury when she was a teenager after falling off the side of a LUAS while tram surfing settled a High Court action for €550,000.

Rebecca Kelly, with an address at Pearse House Pearse Street, Dublin, and who was 13 at the time of the incident, acknowledged in court she should not have been surfing the LUAS and knew it was dangerous.

The court heard there were 54 incidents of tram surfing recorded on the Luas between 2005 and 2010.

A Bus Eireann spokesman said he was not aware of the video emerging from Limerick and said he would make enquiries into the matter.
