The e-ticket system installed on the city's buses has proven unreliable and the BMTA is terminating its contract with the provider, Cho Thavee Plc, acting director-general Prayoon Chuaikaeo said on Friday.
The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority had now stopped using the e-ticket readers installed in its buses. The problem was detected before the BMTA officially accepted the devices for use, he said.
The installation of e-ticket readers started last year. The BMTA had planned to lease the system from Cho Thavee Plc, for use on its 2,600 buses.
The BMTA has already decided to use electronic data capture (EDC) devices from Krungthai Bank to serve holders of government welfare cards, Mr Prayoon said. However, passengers using the cards must tell the bus attendant their destination, so the fare could be set on the device and the money deducted from the card.
The EDCs would later be upgraded so they could accept bus passengers using QR code payment and chipped cards, Mr Prayoon said.
