Bus driver punched and grabbed in 'needless' attack - police want to talk to this man

Police have released a CCTV picture of a man they want to talk to after a bus driver was punched and grabbed in a 'needless' attack.

The attack happened on a bus which had stopped on Oldham Road, in Manchester city centre, at around 3.30pm on Friday, August 20.

The driver was helping a passenger to look for their phone when he was confronted by a man, police said.

The man 'became engaged in an altercation with the driver' before launching the shocking attack on him.

He pushed the driver before punching him in the ribs and grabbing his face.

This caused the driver's glasses to snap, police added.

A member of the public was able to pull the suspect off the bus but he fled the scene.

The driver was not seriously injured but was left shaken after the incident.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers have now released a CCTV picture of a man they want to talk to in connection with the attack.

PC Jordan Wujiw, of GMP's Specialist Operation Branch, said: "This behaviour is completely unacceptable. The bus driver was helping a passenger to locate their phone when he was confronted by a man who needlessly assaulted him.

"After having followed a number of leads and looking through CCTV footage, we are now able to release an image of a man we would like to speak to in connection with this assault.

"If you have any information that could help police to identify this man, please do not hesitate to get in touch."

Anyone with information should contact police by emailing Transport.unit@gmp.police.uk with the subject being incident number 1905 of 20/08/2021.

Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
