Bus driver pleads not guilty to causing police officer's death

Ms Evans was crossing the road when the bus hit her.

A Tasmanian bus driver has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of a Queensland policewoman by negligent driving last year.

Joined by family and friends, 60-year-old Stephen Murray Hartstonge from Cygnet entered a not guilty plea at the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

A hearing has been set for mid-February next year.

Last year, Hartstonge was charged with causing death by negligent driving.

Wendy Evans had been crossing Campbell Street towards the Grand Chancellor Hotel when she was struck by a Metro bus making a right turn on Macquarie Street.

She died at the scene.

Hartstonge was not injured and no passengers were on the bus.

Inspector John Ward said at the time the woman had been staying at the Grand Chancellor Hotel.

Queensland Police Service said Sergeant Evans was a long-serving, well-respected and much-loved officer with 20 years of distinguished service to the people of Queensland.

Sergeant Evans was with the Media and Public Affairs Group.
