Bus driver escapes jail over off-duty policewoman's death

Stephen Murray Hartstonge (R) was given a suspended jail sentence of three months.

A Hobart bus driver who caused the death of an off-duty Queensland policewoman has escaped a jail sentence.

Stephen Murray Hartstonge, 60, from Cygnet in southern Tasmania was found guilty of negligent driving by failing to "keep a proper look out" on a wet evening in Hobart in July 2016.

His bus hit Sergeant Wendy Evans as she was crossing a major road on a pedestrian green light near the Grand Chancellor Hotel on the waterfront. She died at the scene.

Magistrate Chris Webster sentenced Hartstonge to three months' jail, wholly suspended.

He also suspended him from driving for two years.

Wendy Evans had been crossing Campbell Street towards the Grand Chancellor Hotel when she was struck by a Metro bus making a right turn on Macquarie Street.

Hartstonge was not injured and no passengers were on the bus.

Tasmania Police Inspector John Ward said at the time the woman had been staying at the Grand Chancellor Hotel.

The Queensland Police Service said Sergeant Evans was a long-serving, well-respected and much-loved officer.

She had 20 years of distinguished service to the people of Queensland.

Sergeant Evans was with the Media and Public Affairs Group.
