Bus driver charged after hitting a pedestrian crossing the road

A bus driver has been charged after his vehicle struck a pedestrian in Sydney's west this morning.

A 25-year-old man was attempting to cross the road near the intersection of Pentland Avenue and Canterbury Road in Punchbowl when he was struck by the bus.

Closed-circuit vision of the incident captures the man moments after he is struck.

The bus driver then rushes to check on the man as he lies on the nature strip beside the road.

The man was treated at the scene for head and neck injuries, before being taken to St George Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The 56-year-old bus driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative result, before being taken to Campsie Police Station.

He was charged with causing bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle, negligent driving and not stopping at a the stop line at a red light.

The bus was seized and examined by specialist police.

The driver will appear at Burwood Local Court on May 22.
